SEO vs AEO vs GEO: The 2026 Search Stack, Explained

Search is now three surfaces - classic engines, AI answer engines, and generative overviews. Here is how to think about, staff, and measure all three as one program.

SEO AEO GEO ChatGPT Perplexity AI Overviews

A buyer researching a HubSpot partner in Singapore in 2026 rarely opens a single search box. They ask Google, they ask ChatGPT, and they scan the AI Overview at the top of the SERP - often in the same session. If a brand is winning only one of those three surfaces, it is losing two.

The three surfaces, defined

SEO - Search Engine Optimization - is what you already know: ranking on Google, Bing and Baidu using content, links and technical hygiene. It is still the largest source of intent-driven traffic globally.

AEO - Answer Engine Optimization - is the discipline of getting cited inside AI answer engines: ChatGPT (with browsing), Perplexity, Claude, and You.com. These engines synthesize an answer and cite a handful of sources. Winning here means being one of those citations.

GEO - Generative Engine Optimization - targets generative surfaces that live inside classic search: Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Bing Copilot, and Google's SGE-style summaries. GEO is the fastest-growing surface for informational queries in India and Singapore.

Why they need one team, not three

The signals overlap. A well-structured FAQ page with schema markup earns Google rankings (SEO), gets quoted verbatim by Perplexity (AEO), and feeds Google's AI Overview extraction (GEO). Splitting the work across three vendors produces three plans that fight each other for the same content brief.

What actually moves the needle

  • Depth-first content - 1,500+ word pieces with clear H2 structure, direct answers in the first 60 words, and verifiable statistics.
  • Structured data - FAQPage, Article, HowTo, Organization and Product schema, all tested in Google's Rich Results tool.
  • Third-party citations - coverage in Campaign Asia, e27, YourStory, Business Times, Reddit and LinkedIn. AI engines weight these heavily.
  • llms.txt at the root - a machine-readable summary of your site that AI crawlers use to understand who you are.
  • Comparison and listicle content - 'best of', 'X vs Y', and 'top N in [city]' pages, because that is exactly what buyers type into ChatGPT.

Measurement in a three-surface world

Classic rank tracking still works for SEO. For AEO, use Perplexity and ChatGPT prompt-tracking (there are tools; you can also just prompt weekly). For GEO, watch Google Search Console for the new 'AI Overview' impression segment and track branded search lift when AI citations spike.

The brands winning the AI era are not the ones with the best AI content. They are the ones with the best content, period - structured so machines can read it.

Where to start

Audit your top 20 highest-intent pages. Add FAQ schema. Publish an llms.txt. Get three third-party citations in your target market this quarter. That single sprint moves all three surfaces at once.
